American Girl, the company that produces toys and stories emphasizing a girls eye view of significant periods of American History is coming under attack for refusing to severe its ties with Girls Inc.

Girls Inc, formerly Girls Club of America is a non profit organization that encourages girls to buck gender rolls and develop leadership skills. From the Girls Inc Website

Grounded in research and tested in the field, Girls Inc. programs address the whole girl. They build her athletic skills and competitive spirit, nurture her ability and interest in science, math and technology, equip her with critical health and sexuality information, provide her leadership experience, teach her media literacy and money management skills, and foster her self-respect and self-determination

Part of the Girls Inc advocacy statement is a statement under health and sexuality that affirms a woman's reproductive rights. Evangelicals have taken issue with the American Girl/Girls Inc relationship.

Unfortunately, some people don t seem to be able to figure out why we are opposed to a clean organization like American Girl, just because they have asked our little girls to help support an organization that supports abortion and perversion. They can t make the connection, and it s difficult to get them to understand that a little evil is a lot of evil, that half a truth is a whole lie, that funding an abortion supporter is supporting abortion, and that remaining silent is cowardly. Those who remain silent in the face of evil condone that evil....

Like all toy manufacturers, American Girl is very commercial and overly sentimental; however, I m pleased with their support of Girls Inc, and especially happy with the decision to dig their heels into the sand when it comes to stand behind their philanthropic commitment to Choice.
