What about RACE?

words by caitmcp posted October 29, 2005 - 1:45pm

Everytime a blog is posted or posts are browsed by topic, we are ignoring the national white elephant: RACE! I know that many contributors here are aware of the many intersections of gender and race and sexuality, but from the topics list it appears as though "ourword" is our(WHITE)word. For feminist and lesbian, bisexual and transgender people of color this is just another place where there experience and identity isn't affirmed. This individual can't tag their posting as 'lesbiana' and 'race' when they want to write about how their family thinks they "became white" when they came out to their family. Do we want to ignore these issues or worse drive this voice away?

Transgender is also missing from the tags list. Does that mean that this isn't a T-safe place? Or that we aren't allies to this group and their human rights goals?

I'm sure someone here in an admin position will add "race" and "transgender" to the tags list.

In the meantime, please tell us about your experience (if you'd like to share).

Blessings,
Thalia

thanks for bringing these oversights to our attention. adding categories is pretty easy. please speak up anytime you feel a change is needed.

Could we use another term in addition to "bisexual" ? Something like OmniSexual or PanSexual? or Bi/Omni/Pan-Sexual works as well. Bisexual assumes there are only two genders. There's no point in reinforcing a false patriarchal binary that has little to do with nature's true diversity. Thanks!

i personally vote for 'queer' because i most strongly identify as such. if we really want to be inclusive we can add the fun term 'genderfuck.' i might highlight that if i post after seeing kate bornstein next week.
