Post New Orleans

I am aghast as I listen to the news.

I am no fan of how FEMA and Brown, failed, but what I hear is the drubbing of both, yet it is like focusing on the failure of the fire department for failing to save a firetrap that a slum landlord did not see fit to fix.

Again I ask, why did no one invest in the city's failing defenses whose dynamics were all too well known.

the indifference and incompetence of the government in the aftermath of the hurricane pales in comparison to the indifference and incompetence of the government's treatment of poor people throughout the u.s.

how may people die every year from lack of healthcare? how many inner city children have asthma from the pestilence of roach filled buildings? how many old people die because they must choose between food and medicine? why is environmental racism acceptable right up until the dam bursts and the underclass pours into downtown, middle class, and upper class areas? why is it ok to neglect the mentally ill until they won't follow martial law, and then its ok to shoot them?

the dirty little secret of america's neglect of its poor, its sick, its elderly has been on display in new orleans the past couple of weeks. but the fact that this neglect goes on every day, all across america, is still not being addressed.
