My good buddy Lakesha says she refuses to see this movie cuz she's a boxing freak and expects that the movie will be unrealistic about the boxing world. She may be right--I don't know.

What I liked about it:
Clint Eastwood gets better the older he gets.
He cries in the movie.
The woman doesn't have a boyfriend--just her boxing and her trainer.

What I didn't like:
ugh, welfare stereotypes. UGH UGH UGH
Fortunately (I guess) the really ugly and offensive welfare stereotypes came far enough along in the movie that I was already caught up in the plot.

ugh, fat stereotypes along with welfare stereotypes. Ugh again. And that mama was nowhere near 312 pounds. More like in the 180-220 range.

But I know that I can just write Clint a letter and educate him a little bit and his next movie will be even better, so I guess there's justice in this world.

Of course by now I know the whole premise, but I just haven't been in the mood to be depressed.

Was it very depressing? Sophia's choice depressing?

nowhere near Sophie's Choice depressing, but you'll cry. The sad part is really the smallest part of the movie.

re: Sophie Choice: what would you do in her shoes? What choice do you think you would make?

Wow, that sounded like a school question. Sorry. It's just something I wonder about myself. I know what I think I would do, but I may be wrong.

"Casablanca" was not a film about "night club owners." "Million Dollar Baby" is not about boxing. It is about "right to life" and its Janus side, "right to death."

It is a book-end, in my view, to "Revenge of the Sith," where two characters end up in the same place.

It is about Frankie's (Eastwood's) battle with God. "All fighters are pig-headed some way or another: some part of them always thinks they know better than you about something. Truth is: even if they're wrong, even if that one thing is going to be the ruin of them, if you can beat that last bad out of them... they ain't fighters at all."

It is about love.

It is about mercy.

To repeat, it is about "right to life" and its Janus side, about the "right to death."

It is about "My blood - Macushla"
