Should we allow anonymous posters? (Discussion)![]() a poll submitted by media girl posted July 10, 2005 - 10:56pm
No, make people register to comment. 45% (5 votes) Yes, let's open the comments up to anonymous visitors who provide an email address! 45% (5 votes) Yes, let's open comments up to anyone! 9% (1 vote) Other. 0% (0 votes) Total votes: 11 ( words about: website issues )
![]() The only reason I'm placing these on the front page is that they're not easily found otherwise, and I hope we can come to some sort of consensus on these questions. (0)
![]() i think for some of us, we need the safety of anonymity to tell our stories. is it possible to have just one member name called "anonymous" or "generic woman" or something? that has an open password. so anyone who wants to post anonymously can use that member name? it would create an interesting compilation to have a whole bunch of personal stories all signed by "anonymous" or "generic woman" or whatever. ![]() i can see anonymous comments by right thinking people. who would mind that? i would want to nip any comment abuse in the bud though and have irresponsible ones erased quickly. but wouldn't a person have to do that? no one needs to be constantly monitoring comments for abuse, anonymous ones (made by those outside our interest group) would need more a more watchful eye, im guessing. perhaps though, we might create a screen name for anonymous comments for member use. one that can be passed around as needed and used to say things that need to be said but that are best left unattributed. something like a baton, something handed off. then used, then passed to the next runner. something like a wild card, untracable to any one user other than by IP viewable by site admin. a username, like baton rouge? everywoman? aSolitaryVoice? ![]() Comments moderation is possible. It works kind of like Slashdot or Scoop (Booman). People can troll-rate comments, and if they get enough negative they are automatically minimized -- there for people to see, if they really want to deal with it -- but otherwise out. (0)
Would Anonymous Posting make the site vulnerable to comment spam, cause that can be a big bother. (0)
![]() There's an xlnt spam module available, and we can always enable captcha screens (where you type what's displayed in a graphic). (0)
![]() ...as I see it.

Well I read the thread and it answered my quesions, so I voted for anonymous with email... Great work... everything is moving right along.. ;) (0)
![]() couldnt sleep. this question has been on my mind. i just had an idea. can we have it so only members can post. but that when a member posts, she has the option of posting by her user name or anonymously? if she posts anonymously, her identifying information is stripped out and the word Anonymous takes its place? (0)
![]() I could create a post type that would not display any information, and disable the tracker that shows "recent posts" but the author's name is logged in the database and there are many ways someone might discern who posted. Let me look into it. There might be a way. It's a very interesting idea. (0)
![]() ...would be for the person to log out and then post an anonymous comment. Otherwise there's really no persistent way to hide author information from any and all modules that are in place or may be added. (0)
![]() Given the slight edge so far in the poll (63% to 38% as I write this) I thought I'd try enabling anonymous comments as an experiment. If anyone strenuously objects, please speak up. I'm not trying to run roughshod over anyone. It's quite easy to disable anonynmous comments, so if it does not go well (trolls) or if the vote shifts the other way (the poll is open another 5-6 days, I think), I'll turn on the registration requirement. Does that sound workable? Meanwhile, comments moderation is active. It's a way to hide offensive posts. Please use the troll rating sparingly, and only for trolls. (1)
![]() thanks for doing all this work. we are in a fluid and temporary stage here. so i'm all for experimentation. in fact, i hope we never get so static that we avoid experimentation. (1)
![]() The closed vs. anonymous posters poll is now close to even. Did I jump the gun? We had a lot of participation and traffic yesterday, but now it's quiet. I hope I didn't break a sense of trust. Please share how you feel. Any further thoughts? Anyone? (1)
.. or..is at all just a part of the weave? This thing is a new piece of fabric, with multiple weavers, many of whom really don't even know each other very well yet. Rather than spend months of valuable time and energy planning every detail in advance, discussing each strand endlessly, then deciding on shared pattern, it feels to me like some weavers just decided to sit down and start weaving away! Maybe this is how this particular "tapestry" is intended to take shape, and become one with a totally unique pattern that is every shifting and changing. I say we just keep weaving, hope other weavers join in, and see how it all turns out! (yeah,yeah.. I know that not the "established way" to start up a new site!) Instead, is a very creative way, and women are pretty great creators, escpecially once we stop following everyone elses "rules!" (1)
![]() i'd like to change my vote on this. i now think that only members should have posting priveleges. anonymous posters have not agreed to our terms of service or to the mission of the site. it seems to me that with posting privelege comes responsibility. and here, that responsibility is spelled out in our terms of service statement. (1)
![]() UPDATE: Given recent post by "Jack" on this website, i feel strongly that we need to go Members Only immediately. Publicity has apparently brought with it readers who don't support the mission of this site. Readership is fine. But only those who accept our mission and terms of service should be permitted to post. Otherwise, the atmosphere we so treasure around here is going to change...fast. apparently there are some men who aren't here to support our site, but to penetrate it. (1)
![]() Given artemesia's request, and the poll numbers that have swung away from favoring anonymous commenting, we're back to commenting by registered users only. This does not change our membership policy. It just makes people accountable to their posts. This issue remains open, by the way, until we have a clear consensus among the membership. (1)
